I've been to Perhentian three times, twice in the past two years and I love it for a place to get away and relax. The first time was 10+ years ago but the last two have been with my family (3 young children). There is beach, snorkeling off the beach, snorkeling trips, scuba diving, kayaking, jungle trekking (nothing too long or serious) or just relaxing. I can recommend two places.
Mama's - This is a family run resort that is not fancy, but very comfortable. The resort has been run by a Malay family for years. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are average but it did not matter since we spent little time in the room. We also like Mama's because you can easily walk to the nicer beaches to hang out or go snorkeling. The last time we saw 5 turtles while snorkeling.
Tuna Bay - Tuna Bay is nicer than Mama's and it is also a good place for families. The rooms are nicer than Mama's and they have connecting bungalows for families. Tuna Bay's service is excellent, the food is good and they also have a bar at the restaurant. Snorkeling off Tuna Bay's beach is OK.
